Since Graphic tablets with pen tilt are overly oversized (and its rotate function is not so intuitive) I’d really like to rotate the brush tip with the keyboard (Q for left, E for right), and no, the “brush direction locked” option is even worse, not a single time it has listened to me, is the option to rotate the brush tip with the keyboard atleast a possibility?
No it’s not in Krita now.
There are a couple threads in which it is mentioned, including this one: Rotating a brush by holding down a modifier (similar to Shift for Brush Size)
I use the popup widget to rotate the brush.
Yes this please. it would remarkably improve workflow for people like me who use rectangular/ triangular brushes or even patterned stuff. at the moment i have a few instances of my brush saved as quick select presets but a hotkey setup to configure my tablet wheel to would be an absolute boon.
Update: I just tried a pentablet with built-in tilt, and the rotation is simply unusable, not only you have to hold the pen in unnatural positions but the brush tip can flip mid-stroke too.
I’ve always found tilt to be rather unergonomic. So instead of tilt elevation, I tend to use Tilt direction.
You’ll have to adjust most of the brushes though, if you want to use this.
This is definitely a must.
bump bump. I so wish this is possible in Krita. I use shift-arrows in PS to rotate the brush to find the best angle for the brush stroke visually. This is still needed with a tilt supported device/brush since the initial angle is very crucial for good brush stroke.
It is an option but this is a half baked solution because it is not possible to see the brush image on the canvas visually while rotating the brush.
Why not try this one? It is not exactly doing what you described, but it is a way.
By the way, please don’t use bump, we prefer postings with “substance”, posts that add new ideas, views, solutions, to the discussions here, which at least you did. But some might misinterpret a post like yours as a call to bump, and bumping is very much disliked here.

PLEASE give us the ability to map rotation to keyboard shortcuts, with options for amount. I also like the modifier-drag option.
I will work on this feature, but I will need your help first my dear artists!
@dkazakov @freyalupen and @tiar completed the enormous work of rewriting Paint Engine’s Settings code to Lager lib.
This rewrite will make it much easier to do UX work like the one in this topic.
We need you to test if new code works like it used to, so we can merge it as soon as possible. Sooner it will be tested, sooner it will be merged, and sooner I will start working on shortcuts and gizmos to control brush rotation (and maybe even mirroring).
Test builds, and KA topic is here: [needs testing] First testing packages for the lager-based brush editor - #33 by dkazakov
A "real-time, “on the fly” brush rotation is really a must. It’s so difficult to adjust it and return to the canvas. It needs many tries to reach the correct angle and this is time consuming. Moreover, you may need another angle just afterwards. Two buttons to rotate the brush real-time on the canvas, that’d really be a game changer.
Is there any development on this subject? This wpuld be the greatest addition to Krita ever.
This huge rewrite of Brush settings is done and merged - it’ll be released with 5.2 in September (hopefully)
So I believe, now it should be possible to start work on exposing it to other places in krita and Python.
@SirPigeonz seems quite overloaded with his daytime job, so I’m not sure he’s planning to do that anymore.
Merge window for new features is closing soon, so I wouldn’t expect any if that to happen in the next release.
In fairness a brush rotation shortcut would definitely do well in the list of major new features.
I would like to work on brush rotation but yeah I’m a stretched thin lately…
5.2 and it’s still missing.
Yes unfortunately nobody worked on it yet.
And @kaichi1342’s plugin, which does the trick, is currently out of order, and I don’t know when @kaichi1342 will have time to revisit that plugin. Don’t forget that people have a life beside Krita.
