Social media and artists discussion

Yes

For me, I found mastodon simpler & easier to use than twitter, and is less conducive to the race for likes.
When you like, you just like: you and liked author are informed, and that’s all
When you really want to share, you boost.
It’s simple and efficient

Except registration part, need to understand concept of instance of which instance to choose

Maybe it to prevent bots is reason why hopefully.

Honestly Mastodon sound like awesome website. I’m hoping it stays that way by the time I do join.

Oh bots too are there on mastodon, but they are marked as bots specifically. There are many open source bots created to post content say a news feed from a news website, feed of your govt alert website etc. I am planning to use a script to automate posting our featured tag images on mastodon sometime.

The only difference from twitter is that when you create a bot account you are supposed to tag it as bot the account will state that it is a bot account clearly.

The servers remind me of ā€œcafe’sā€ in fancafe in kpop which each one are controlled by different group and have different moderation and level of application requirement.
Though there the process is more like create account first → apply to join a fancafe [you can join multiple ones].

The choices in server is kinda overwhelming even for me. There’s a point when number of choice gets overwhelming XD.

I think the start should be a question about interest, then give suggestion of server close to that interest so the choices get reduce.

One popular German instance is called Trƶt Cafe.

It all depends on the server you join. Mastodon.social for example got the reputation of being too big and undermoderated, slowly becoming a second twitter. Mastodon.art has considered to defederate them (meaning that mastodon.social would be unreachable from madtodon.art). There’s is a way to move accounts (taking your followers but not your posts with you) though.

It’s important to remember that mastodon ist just a software everyone can use and set up, it’s not a single website like twitter is.

currently mastodon.art is not accepting applications :frowning:

i think its fine if Mastodon.social to be like that , that’s just how it goes, i guess most want to join where there are more people to interact. Though more people with just volunteer mods = hard to moderate content.
I would not be shock if a good number of art account choose to be on .social, since more people = more reach but then more people = more mess.

At the moment, mastodon.online has nothing in the Local timeline and stuttering content appearance in the Federated timeline.
I think the servers are being stressed, all over the fediverse.

Instance on which I am was practically dead for 24h between monday and tuesday; there was 4h to 24h of delay between a sent toot and to see it in timeline.
Admins fixed the problem but informed us of a hole of 15h during nothing was processed (and then, everything from this range time is ignored with/from other instances)
They’ve also had to block all new registration and provide now list of alternatives instances

Concerning mastodon.social I have a ā€œtestā€ account on it, used to understand how interactions works.
it seems this instance is currently suffering a bit.

I think the twitter verified mess has resulted to some to genuinely start looking for alternative. Then a bunch of known people jump to mastodon , Neil Gailman linked one for mastodon.social.

I has my mind set to join .art , so hopefully.

I joined Mastodon a few years ago but I didn’t really understand it at the time. I’ve re-joined it this year mainly to follow people who post about open source tech to learn about resources I can talk about on my blog ( @artsquirrelblog@mastodon.social)and I’m learning the ropes before I decide to post art on there but there are some awesome artists joining and I like the ā€œno dramaā€ atmosphere of the place.

I’m still trying to figure out how to reply to things… early days.

I like Mastodon because there, on the servers I like, there is active intervention against any form of hate speech and aggression, usually with a zero tolerance doctrine implemented. There are clean and healthy communities, there it is rule, that freedom of speech means not to have the freedom of hate speech. The others, I’m free to leave.

Yes! I love that about it!

The mods over there just told me that they have about 1000 applications pending review and they are going over it one by one  . They will open up limited invites later.

I read it and OMG mastodon was not prepared for that wow . Things got so wild at twitter in the last 24 hours that people are mass jumping to the closest alternative they know.

it’s not ā€œmastodonā€ that is not ready: you’ve thousands of instances
it’s instances that are not ready: not enough instanced, not enough strong instances

Like, imagine you have 100 planes
And everyone want to go in the same plane: the plane is not ready for that
If everyone is splitted on all planes it work better

Here for mastodon.art, they just need a bigger plane (more cpu, more ram, more storage, more bandwidth, …)
You can find other instance still opened and that work without being overloaded.
Choosing biggest instance here (like mastodon.social) may not be the best choice

Also, instance can work because people spent time to manage them (moderation, server management, …)
It’s provided ā€œfor freeā€ like Krita is, and instances need donation to be operational (like Krita)

what i mean is the .art server was not ready - as im talking specifically about the conversation @raghukamath have with mastodon.art mod, . sorry i forgot to write it. [i have tendency to drop random words at times ]

Edit: also i think one who made the infinite invite didnt anticipate that it goes viral to the point it generated that many application.

oh ok
