Social media and artists discussion

Mastodon is way a much better experience for me, compared to twitter. But I’m still looking for an alternative to DeviantArt, the fediverse doesn’t really has something fitting. Pixelfed seemed nice but it’s more like Instagram as it seems and also doesn’t seem to have galleries public.

Looking some pixelfed user’s, it seems you can organize your picture in collections

An example:

I have not researched enough about this properly so I may be wrong, but there is wordpress plugin for activity pub which allows you to update your mastodon or pixelfed instance when you post on wordpress and allows users from the fediverse to comment etc. If this works it means I can host my own website while adding the social aspect to it. And everything will be in one place by blog gallery etc.

interesting, Honestly never heard WordPress doing that. Though it been a while since I’ve heard about WordPress.
is this what you mean?

There is also this tool I found tool/website though I’m not 100% sure about it

Have you checked their ToS already? I want to avoid another “all your art are belong to us” debacle of DeviantArt.

If the service offer’s alternative licenses like Creative Commons, that would be kinda neat.

I use PostyBirb since a few years ago. It offers posting artworks to multiple websites simultaneously but nothing more. Still a huge timesaver.

No not these but I mean there is a plugin for activitypub (which is the underlying language that mastodon and other fediverse software speak) to add in in wordpress. so that people can follow your wordpress website from mastodon pixelfed etc.

I only skim through though most of TOS on most websites I mention (I will be double checking)
with inkblot.art

with pillowfort
there wasn’t anything worrying about it though I will probably will have to look over again for future references
pillowfort TOS

ohh… that actually is more useful :spiral_notepad:
might try it when I get the chance

Art Station get’s mentioned a lot too. I most likely will create accounts there anyway, to not lose track of my mutuals who aren’t on mastodon, even when I don’t plan to upload anything.

Just found out that ArtStation’s company was aquired by Epic Games in 2021, if anyone cares.

Yes…that’s my plan at the moment…we’ll see.

p.s. I just tried out the ‘collection’ on pixelfed … it’s beta and doesn’t seem to be working…only would display a single photo even though I selected/added several… Hmmm…

p.p.s. – a bit finicky but after I did an edit (not just add images) and save it seems to have stuck and gave me a three-image collection of krita images…

The thing I don’t like about most of these free image hosting services/galleries is that you have little to no control over the gallery…the image organization… titles…descriptions…etc… much of it is just default and no control over how it works/displays/etc.

It was an ancient ancestor of the elephant that became extinct around the same time as the mammoth. I might check it out too.

I’ve had an artstation and pixelfed account for a while now…but never did anything with pixelfed…I have uploaded a flock of birds to artstation but it seems more focused on sf/fantasy/movie/production kind of stuff that I’m not particularly into. I’m more into realistic art/fine art, nature, landscapes, portraits, etc.

That would definitely be convenient!

I checked ArtStation a bit more and it looks like you can use your own domain for about 7 bucks a month, that would be about the same price as renting a small virtual server but without having to invest time for maintaining and setting everything up myself. That sounds kinda good. Still not as customizable as a full fledged website but it’s a start, and it’s plugged into a bigger system. But does seem to miss the social media components. Does anyone have more experience with that?

With less than 4 euros per month you will get a hetzner vps. You can use any static site generator and hote a simple html website. I used to do this for a long time and then I switched to wordpress. I still selfhost all my things from email to chat to nextcloud etc. May be mastodon etc will be in the line next.

there’s somewhat of doom feeling this last few weeks …

for all its fault - pre this ownership - i like twitter as is. Yeah there’s toxic part but its that app i just post something and I dont feel forced to add people i know personally lol or be very professional or whatever, also scrolling and just opening one artwork always leads me to more to discover. :joy:

for all its flaws - i’ll miss that app. I kinda always see it as a big public square or convention hall and as messy as one but more direct.

i’m honestly thinking of just doing this. I already self hosted a site before. Though I dont have enough good work to showcase lol.
