Recently Krita keeps crashing on my Tablet (Samsung S6 Lite) and as of now it won’t even open, it just closes immediately. I’ve restarted the device and uninstalled and installed the app, cleared any cache (still have more than enough free space on my storage) but nothing has changed.
Any suggestions?
We’re trying to get it fixed more properly, but it requires an update to a new SDK, while none of the current core team are Android experts.

Welcome, @Rise_ofthePipiz
The solution to your problem is just a few posts above yours in this thread. No need to have waited for a reply.
Thank you so much! Ive tried all the instructions as intended and Krita is back. I cant wait to get back in drawing.
i tried the solution described but it didnt work for me. i use samsung tab s6 lite. i also made sure to leave the beta program…
I found I had issues due to my previous data interfering with re-installation (probably because I did something stupid when moving around my data). I found that the program wouldn’t start and told me “resource is not writable”, but started up fine once I deleted the program data when uninstalling. When you uninstalled the app did you select the option to keep your data?
Hello everyone, I apologize for my English, I write from Italy. Since yesterday afternoon I can’t open the krita app. I have already emptied the cache, tried to uninstall and reinstall…I don’t know how to do it anymore… you have any advice?
I found the discussion right after writing the question. Thank you very much!!! I’m trying, fingers crossed!!!
Hi, all!
I have just received an approval from Google for the update of Krita in the beta-track, so it have started its rollout. Could you help me with testing this new release 5.2.8?
- Join the beta-track again (using this link)
- Check that the available version is “5050233 (5.2.8)”. If your version is lower, then you are not included into the rollout by Google and you cannot test it right now.
- If the proposed version is correct, install Krita from there. When Krita starts, the version should be 5.2.8.
- Test if opening and saving of the documents works fine on your device
- Test if audio playback in animation works fine
I have tested these things locally in Android 14 emulator. But things might look different on other systems.
If you managed to test it, please write your Android version ![]()
@dkazakov Is it possible at all to allow somewhere in the settings to change the path of where everything for krita is stored on Android? I ask this because it is impossible to move import or anything any files that have gone into the Android data folder without a PC. Third party apps do not allow you to move all of the files from krita or copy them to another folder outside of the data folder, anybody who tells you differently is not using a current version of Android from 13 up with the scooped memory issue. Because of this all brushes everything have been lost to me settings for everything once krita was uninstalled to reinstall an older version. So it would be nice if the pathway could be changed from Android data folder to a custom folder on the external storage. This may not be something that is possible immediately but it is definitely something that should be looked into.
I have had the same issue trying to back up my stuff properly for 5.2.8. Even with a PC, I couldn’t successfully copy all Krita files (only some of the files seemed to have an issue).
I have been able to copy the krita5.xmlgui file (which (hopefully) contains my toolbar settings) onto my PC desktop, and because I only care about my toolbar, it’s good enough for me.
You can change the location of the data though: Settings → Configure Krita → General → Resources
But it’s not very helpful to change the datas location if all your settings are already saved to the restricted access folder.
Thanks for the fixes.
I was on non beta/ 5.2.6 on Galaxy S8+ crashing, uninstalled on tablet (checked the save data option) & then re installed from Google Play.
Now on version 5.2.3 which seems to be working fine. ![]()
I’m experiencing an issue with the newest version of Krita (5.2.5) on my Galaxy tab s8.
Namely the app crashes on start-up, I have not experienced an issue with krita before the newest update. I have already tried clearing the cache, reinstalling the app and even updating android.
Is this a common issue?
Either way, is there a way for me to revert to the previous version until an update comes out?
See this post over here
Hi @Lupus117 Yes, there was a problem with the latest update. I moved your post into the thread that contains the solution.
Hi, all!
Did any of you has already received an update to 5.2.8 in Google Play in the Beta channel? I need your confirmation that the issue it resolved, so we could rollout the release to everyone
Hi - The update just became available in my area this morning (Canada). I’m now on 5.2.8 with no problems but I have to say my ONN device never had problems with 5.2.6.
You must have Android version older than 14. The issue happens only on Android 14 ![]()
