Split layers generating too many layers

Today I was doing a simple drawing. As I always do, I used the Colorize mask, then converted it to Paint Layer. There were only 9 layers in total, 6 being contour, within a group. (Krita reports this number as 10, probably because it counts the group as a layer). So far so good.

I went to “Split Layers”…and that’s where the problem started! I tried changing the palette, at least twice, to see if that would fix it…

… but the result is always the same: more layers are generated than usual (and the drawing should not have more than fifteen colors). See that the number of layers has increased to… 144! Using Krita 5.0.6.0 here, on Windows 10.

Hi

The palette is only used for naming layers
Not to split.

The colorize mask might generate antialised border colors.
That why you have so much layers.

Try to play with fuziness parameters to reduce number of layers (maybe need to uncheck the “disregard opacity” option, not sure, I don’t have a computer here :upside_down_face:)

Yes, a group layer is a layer.

• Grum999: I’ve made two attempts now, both with the “Disregard opacity” option unchecked. The first one, with the “Fuzziness” option set to zero, was left with to 146 layers.

The second, with the “Fuzziness” option at 25, went to 25 layers. Partially solved the problem. The bird’s feet and the branch, although they are different colors, were placed in a single layer. Krita created two layers, with no color at all:

Well, under these conditions, I can’t put it as “solved”: I’ll make other drawings and see what happens. Strange, every time I just clicked the “Apply” button, without having to configure anything!

Thank you anyway!

• halla: Okay, that’s what I thought…

Can you please share the .kra file? I’m afraid it works as expected and it’s just limitation of this system, because, well, it doesn’t really distinguish between antialiasing and similar but valid colors. In case of one layer with both colors, you can run Split Layers again with lower Fuzziness to split them up.

When I get so many layers, I check the content of the layer by hovering. Most often it is just small pixels per layers. So I select and delete those layer.

• tiar: Yes, the file is *here, in Mediafire.

• raghukamath: I do two checks in this case. In the first one, I hold down Ctrl and click on the layer: if there is something on it, some selection will appear. In the second, I hide the layer and see if there is any difference.
