There is no reason to hesitate if you go through this world with an open heart, have a clear understanding of your own limits, and do not harm others in order to hurt them. However, that does not mean that you should not speak out clearly about things you believe to be right or wrong. If you can maintain that kind of self-confidence, I believe you have everything you need to successfully overcome this hesitation.
I’ll give you an interesting fact: Krita’s current interface style isn’t really the default, so to speak. It has other styles available. As part of KDE, the project has access to other styles, such as Breeze, which was removed due to some problems in the past, but those problems no longer exist (as far as I remember). It’s just a matter of adding it back, something that was already proposed several years ago, which is why I created a thread to have it integrated again.
Even so, if you want to change how Krita looks, you can do so:
I’ve been globally reading through this and I really don’t get the point.
Krita’s UI looks fine and just as modern as other programs and it’s completely flexible to set up according to everyone’s wishes. What more does it need?
No one is really gatekeeping a certain Krita UI design or not. It’s just that “proposals” with shallow or missing definitions, general phrases, no understanding or complete disregard of the technical constraints or limits of the framework, and based on what is primarily beliefs is not enough for a designer to work with, let alone a developer. This is a very technical matter and suggestions on the basis of “I don’t like this because it is not my taste” are not really useful to anyone. Critique on a proposal for it’s lack of details on how to achieve it’s goals, is not gatekeeping. And I say this as a decade long user who has a lot to complain myself about certain parts of the software (looking at you, resource manager, layer styles and vector tools).
I’ve been looking at this thread for a bit and I’m now looking forward to 5.3.0 even more outside of the fantastic looking text tool rework, I may try customizing my Krita interface in the upcoming update.
I will admit that I’m one of those UI artists that doesn’t know how to code (very well that is, I have a hint of an idea as to what I’m doing when it comes to coding), personally, I think that there is room for improvement when it comes to Krita’s UI, but I don’t see it as an immediate issue. Most professional programs I’ve used now have had UIs that feel ‘old’ which seems to be a large complaint about Krita’s, so it may just be a more general issue with professional creative software. I am still working on improving my skills when it comes to UI so I haven’t given a shot at making a mockup for some adjustments I think would be very nice to have, but I may after I get some experience making things that actually work instead of just look pretty but do nothing.
I don’t see a UI/UX rework as an immediate need, since it would be a massive undertaking to do, especially since my main want would be for a phone compatible UI option for Krita Android / IOS and various random tweaks. It is something though that I think would be good to continuously work on however. maybe not a full rework, but I would really enjoy QoL (such as brush stroke previews, which I would personally love to see incorporate the current designs for the brushes as I find them charming) or usability enhancements (for me personally this would be doing something like making the tool options docker pop up whenever using the transform tool, though that may not be the best example since others may prefer it behaving differently)
So you’re saying that there isn’t ui designer people in krita community that would volunteer to update the ui. And you might be right but I think krita is such a big community that there must be some. I mean this app is open source. People donate and the krita team hire people. Maybe there isn’t money? idk really. But if there’s a problem to solve about krita, I %100 think it’s UI. And well not being able to use photoshop brushes but it’s really not doable as it requires whole brush system to be changed
