Unified Subwindows and Tab [multiple document mode]

Why subwindows and tab on multiple document mode needs to be unified?

Unifying both system will help user to have more flexibility on their preferred way to work and/or display their document instantly without having to choose subwindows or tab.

It also helps new user from other software like CSP or Photoshop easier time on Krita, easier to figure out how to manage their document window.

Details on how CSP implement their document window management:

Feature spec:

  1. Tab and subwindow can exist at the same time. User don’t need to manually change between subwindows and tab on settings.
  2. Document are tab-able on any other document, while still resizeable, even on detached document window.
  3. Even detached window is still tab-able.
  4. Any docked (non-detached) window is resizable, while other docked window will resize automically as well. Similar to Plugin: Subwindow organizer
  5. Detached window should be able to exist outside Krita interface.

Potential usage:

  • multiple monitor, where two document are tabbed on main window, while other documents are displayed on other monitor.
  • allowing more complex workflow for people who working on multiple document constantly (usually on game asset creation or comic making).
  • easier on constant juggling between multiple reference files. Unified system will make reference easier to group based on their categories.

Do you know that you can vote for your own feature requests?
This is a way to show the developers how much a feature is wanted by the user-base. This does not explicitly mean that the feature request which cast the most votes will be implemented, but the chances that such a request gets more attention than a request without or only very few votes is at least higher.
The current roadmap for Krita is unfortunately very full and long, so it probably will need time to see this in Krita, but that does also mean, there is more time to cast more votes, if you want to look on the positive side of things. Also, there is more time to collect ideas and refine the request. So better a request with a long waiting time and a small chance, than a request never made, because a request not made will most probably never be seen in Krita.

This is a MUST HAVE!!!

But you cannot have it, because the tabbar/mdi component is provided by the Qt framework, and until we find a suitable replacement, this is it, and it’s what you’ll have to make do with…

You are looking for a replacement for the mdi or qt? I had no idea. :0

A replacement for Qt’s MDI classes and Qt’s dockwidget classes, not for Qt. A possible candidate is KDAB’s KDockWidgets: GitHub - KDAB/KDDockWidgets: KDAB's Dock Widget Framework for Qt

I don’t know if this is a tall order or not, but I simply would like to have a preset of sorts that would allow me to achieve something of this caliber in a more streamlined fashion. (Image below)

I like to work this way, but it takes a good minute to set up every time I open and close the program. I don’t use the comics docker because it supposedly doesn’t export to PNG and JPG formats and is clunky to use. There’s also no option for chapters in that docker.
Anyhow, this post is not about the comics docker, but just about a quality of life feature that I would grately appreciate having access to.

Perhaps this request is too trivial and niche, since my comic is in a scroll format that needs specific accommodations for it to be worked on effectively. Comic-making is time-consuming and tricky, so I’d simply like to cut corners where I can. I hope you understand ^^

I’ve been very happy with Krita over the past few years, but it’s a bit limited when it comes to comic features that clip studio paint already has. Thanks for reading, and have a nice day!

I think it’s something like this?

Ah, I tried searching if there was a similar request to mine, but I didn’t have the wording right so I didn’t see this before writing my request. Unfortunately it doesn’t have a fix, so I’ll just keep my request up

This doesn’t seem to be a fix, rather it’s a feature request. If your request is the same as the one linked, we need to combine them. Can you confirm, @rosi_is_artistic?

I’ll confirm👍

@rosi_is_artistic Done. And your vote has been transferred over to this one. Thanks.

This might be useful to you as well: Plugin: Subwindow organizer

Updating the post, this plugin currently no longer works.

Likewise, I remember that it was planned to change the way the windows are now grouped in Krita, but I don’t remember where that post is.
