Wraparound mode doesn't allow drawing outside the main canvas, in the repeated areas

I’m using wraparound to create a proper GUI texture that can be repeated via 9-slice + tiling.

I’m drawing at the edge between the left and right for a seamless transition. However, as soon as my brush reaches the right edge, it suddenly stops drawing and doesn’t cross the edge of the main canvas onto the repeated tile area (and same for left).

I understand that you normally draw inside the canvas, but for me, the real power of wraparound comes when you can seamlessly draw across the tiles.

In Aseprite, the Tiled Mode allows you to draw in any repeated tile and the main image will be affected. Now, Aseprite only shows 9 tiles and uses more simple drawing operations, so I get it if it’s harder to do on Krita.

But the fact that the main canvas is not indicated at all (it looks exactly like other tiles, it has no surrounding frame or anything) means it’s very hard to know where to draw. You have to disable wraparound mode, spot the location of the main canvas, then reenable wraparound and draw on the main canvas.

This all makes me wonder if it’s a bug rather than by design.

Normally Wraparound Mode does allow drawing outside the main canvas, although I believe it does not work for MyPaint engine brushes. What type of brush are you using? Also, what version of Krita?

That was it, I was using Pencil 1 Sketch (mypaint) brush. I didn’t know about MyPaint Engines, and I don’t think I’ll be able to recreate the pencil brushes on my own with the Pixel Engine, so I suppose I’ll have to go without (unless I find another pencil brush online).

Pixel Engine brushes work on wraparound areas fine.

By the way, I use Krita 5.1.5 but I suppose the exact version is less relevant if the limitation of MyPaint engine applies to all versions.

@huulong: Why recreate the wheel when it is always invented? Or the pencils?
Have you tried the pencils from @RamonM’s Sketching-Bundles, these are great, maybe they are what you are after?

Or maybe the Jarry H. Line Brush Set for KRITA? This came just into my mind because of its ‘‘c) Pencil-1 Hard Copy’’, it is an excellent set, but it is not all pencils →

Thanks for all the links. Answering the main question, I see my paint brush engine as non complete. Only for procedural brushtips so it is more limited than pixel brush engine which is more powerful with a better performance . The Mypaint brush engine performance is not enough for big artworks and has some weird behaviors.

I learnt a lot of brush making with Mypaint. But for regular painting… not for me in 2023
