Double-clicking the layer thumbnail would be a convenient, quick way to access its layer style, quicker than right-clicking the layer and selecting Layer Style from the context menu, and quicker than clicking the layer and hitting a shortcut for Layer > Layer Style. Admittedly, this is something I’m used to from Photoshop, but I feel it’s a very good use of the space.
Currently, double-clicking a layer thumbnail brings up renaming the layer, something you can also access by double-clicking the name area, which is probably the more intuitive spot to initiate renaming anyway.
The layer thumbnail already gets special treatment - Ctrl+clicking it Selects Opaque, and clicking the thumbnail of a Group opens/collapses the group. So, hopefully it wouldn’t be too weird to modify it to have special treatment for double-clicking too. Hopefully Groups can still open/collapse on single clicks, while opening Layer Style on double clicks.

So, the only thing I’m thinking here is whether this always makes sense. Because for example, on a file layer or a filter layer, I’d imagine having the layer properties pop up instead of the layer style would be much more useful. Unless we all decide that having the layer properties button at the bottom of docker is enough for this.
(For layerstyles we could have something like ‘ctrl+click the FX button to open layer styles quickly’ but that of course wouldn’t work if the problem is actually about applying layer styles quickly,

I’d like to apply layer styles quickly too, aye xP I don’t often need to change them after I do, so the most important speed-up for me is accessing Layer Style for a layer without any current layer style.
I haven’t used file or filter layers yet so I can’t gauge what’s most convenient. Editing layer properties does sound more useful for those, and double-clicking is way faster than selecting a layer and clicking a button. For what it’s worth, in Photoshop, double-clicking Adjustment Layer thumbnails brings up their properties instead of their Layer Style, although in PS you can also click the empty area around the layer name to bring up the Layer Style dialog (I’d rather not have that last bit in Krita though - it makes renaming layers with short names annoying).

I think that the double clicking should bring the most useful dialog for a particular layer type. So for normal layers, that would be layer styles. But for file layers, fill layers and filter layers, the properties window would be a better candidate.
