Any plans for vector animation?

Hello. Not sure if it was ever mentioned or discussed:

Krita’s tools are a godsent and I love them lots. I wanted to dab into animation and noticed that vectors can only be manipulated so much. Were there ever any plans to give vector animation some love? I do not possess the technical knowledge to understand how easy or difficult it is, but even keyframing a bunch of vector lines would make things crazy good.

 Hello @Zevraska, and welcome to the forum!

But you really should know about it, using our forum search you would have found a lot to read:

I would say, wishes are enough, but if our devs see vector animation as a goal for Krita is nothing I would bet on. This has to do with Krita’s view of itself, which can be found here.
And here you find the 2026 Krita Roadmap.

Vector objects can be animated but in a ‘simple way’ using Animation Curves:
Animation Curves Docker — Krita Manual 5.3.0 documentation

This is an animated transform mask with keyframes and adjustable auto-interpolation between keyframes that applies an animated/interpolated sequence of Free Transform parameters.
However, it operates on the raster projection of the vector layer and so it’s not much different from its use on a raster layer image.

There is no form of ‘tweening’ for animating the shape of a vector object such as e.g. moving the relative positions of vector vertices/nodes over a period of time.

Also, learning how to fully use Animation Curves takes some effort and there are many ‘paper cuts’ with the UI and UX.
Having said that, I use Animation Curves extensively and am satisfied with them because I’ve got used to them.

There are two options:

  1. Create the vectors in Inkscape. I tested this with geometric shapes; I don’t know if it works with more complex shapes. You can import them into Krita, provided you save the Inkscape file without layers and in Plain SVG format (I explain this in more detail at the end of this post). Or, if it doesn’t work with SVG, there’s the option to export in png format…

  2. Create the vectors in Krita itself in a separate file and copy them to the animation file. Then, convert them to a paint layer.
