Backup settings procedure?

Hello, I have a new computer and want to add some old “settings”(experience of using krita) to my current setup of krita withotu overwriting all of my current “settings”. How do I do that? The settings I do not want to overwrite are tags of brushes so that i can acsess them in the pop up palette.

I have seen this thread Help, my custom tag is gone :< that mentions “‘kis_paintoppresets_tags.xml’.” But i assume this is outdated? I have this file backed up, but I cannot find this file in my current Krita install so I do not know where I need to put this file.

I tried copying all of my “kritarc” folder over to my new krita install, but the tags for the brushes do not show up in my new krita, only the new ones I made after the move.

I really struggle to understand in general how resources are handled, I have read a lot of the documentation but there has been a lot of changes, so I would really like a tutorial on a complete procedure of what to do when one is to move Krita from one pc to another… I somehow mess this up every time.

I do not see any info on how to backup or transfer tags in the manual either Resource Management — Krita Manual 5.0.0 documentation

I’d suggest that you read my reply in this topic:
Krita configuration file

Have you been doing work on your new computer to create custom resources such as custom tags and assigning them to brush presets?
If so, a full migration (which is very easy) will overwrite any new configuration-settings and recently created resources on your new computer.

If you haven’t made many such changes on your new computer, it may be a good idea to do a full migration of the old computer settings and resources, then carry on from that known and familiar environment on your new computer.

An alternative would be to use a portable version of the program: I used to do this in my first experiences with Krita…

I don’t see an article on portable krita in the manual, how would I go about this and what are the pros’ n cons of doing it that way? (like is there a performance hit)

The portable Krita is a functionally identical version of Krita, which, instead of installing it from an EXE file, is unpacked from a ZIP archive into a directory of your choice. After unpacking Krita you will find 3 shortcuts (krita.lnk, krita-animation.lnk, krita-minimal.lnk) in the main directory of the unpacked archive which you can use to start the included version of Krita. Alternatively, you could change from the directory with the 3 shortcuts into the directory “bin” located there and start the file “krita.exe” with a double click, or select this as shortcut target for the desktop. The only thing that is missing, but you already have by installing the EXE version on your PC is the so-called “shell extension”, this can also be downloaded from Krita’s homepage on the download page. And if you want to try another version you can have it with the portable versions on the PC at the same time, also you can use the portable versions “beside” the fixed installed version (using at the same time is only possible with background knowledge, and is needed by the fewest users). And if you don’t want to use a portable version anymore, you just delete its directory, and it’s gone.

I don’t know what advantages the portable version should offer with regard to your original topic about backing up Krita’s settings, but now you might know what distinguishes the portable version from the installed one, it’s the way of installation, and you can have more than one at a time on your PC (not run more than one at the same time, as mentioned above).

Thanks, I merged my old krita folder from appdata to the new one, and so far I did not have trouble with doing it that way instead of replacing it, so i got to keep both settings. But I think its possible the previous install was v4, and from what I read otherwise on this forum, is that tags from v4 do not carry to v5 due to some bug, so I went ahead and retagged my old brushes, because the old tags did not appear even after the merge.

Resource management was completely changed and redone from scratch in v5 hence the side effect. going forward it should not happen again unless there is another rewrite which will again be a majotr version change.
