Brush presets unavailable

Krita Version 5.3.2.1 OS Windows 11

Hi, for the past few months, I’ve consistently had the problem of my brush presets being unavailable. Occasionally, following advice from previous posts worked for a while. However, the problem would reoccur after a month or less.

I’ve tried reinstalling krita, renaming and deleting my sqlite resource cache, updating krita, reinstalling all of my brush presets, and checking if I have any brush presets installed. Any help would be wonderful, as I would like to permanently resolve my issue.

My knowledge on technology is very limited and have no experience working with computers. A detailed and understandable description of what to do would be very useful.

Since we aren’t allowed reading minds, it would have been great if you had described what you did, or to give us the links to those “previous” posts whose advices you followed, since that would allow us to see what you’ve tried so far. Right now we only know you have an issue and were not successful in solving it.

Before we begin, and as I just described in another topic, reinstalling Krita is a waste of time (at least in above 99.99% of all cases) because →

Reinstalling Krita does nothing than exchanging a working installation with a working installation. The reason behind that is that a (re-)installation only exchanges the files in Krita’s installation folder, nothing else, the resources folder and the settings files are left completely untouched to preserve them.
After a first installation of Krita, before starting it the first time, you will not find anything in Krita’s resource folder %APPDATA%\krita\ nor will you find the settings files in %LOCALAPPDATA% because they only will be created with the first start, but if you reinstall Krita, Krita will not overwrite the existing resources nor the existing settings files. Ergo > nothing will be changed or exchanged through a reinstallation of Krita which means it is in the absolute 100% same state as it was before the reinstallation.

This reinstallation thing is a Windows thing (myth) which may work for most pure Windows programs, but Krita stems out of the world of Linux and, put simply, uses Linux structures under the hood.

Before you begin you need to make two settings in your Windows Explorer, so Windows will not revert your changes because it believes to know what is good for you. After setting these hooks Windows will no longer silently revert changes to certain files users try making (and can’t see that Windows has reverted their settings before they set these two hooks).

Now to your issue, it sounds like the one that is reported more often recently (quote from the same topic):

Currently, there is something “wrong” with Krita from which at least I not know by now what exactly that is, and we have many users reporting exactly that issue. The problem is that both solution suggestions I gave in the posting I linked above worked for me and also for a few users, but unfortunately not for all users - and that makes it a mystery (but with some I suspect they simply were unable to follow my advice because of a lack of technical expertise when it comes to solve an issue with their PC or in other words because they weren’t tech-savvy (but there I may be completely wrong)).
One of our developers, @tiar, is already looking into what the problem might be and how to fix it, but so far it seems the solution hasn’t been found yet - at least I haven’t heard anything about it, though that could also be because I’m currently unable to keep up with the forum as I’m sick.

So, not knowing if you took my following quoted hints as advice to try solving your issue, these two tips helped me both to solve the issue you describe, let’s hope they’ll do it for you too:

After opening Krita and getting this error report, saying you have no brushes or bundles, click it away and then enter your resources’ folder via Settings > Manage Resources... where you have to click the button Open Resource Folder which will then open the resource folder. There scroll to the very end and select all the bundles shown there and copy them to your desktop. Restart Krita to get this error message again and then click the error message away but then click the button + Import, in the opening Explorer dialog window browse to the bundles you just copied to your desktop and select all of them, then click on the OK-Button to import them, confirm the request to overwrite the existing ones. After Krita is ready with importing them restart Krita. Does it now work?

If that did not do the trick, then you can try if a rebuild of Krita’s resource database resourcecache.sqlite will solve your issue. To rebuild it you need to enter Krita’s resource folder again the way I described above, and then, depending on your OS, you can close Krita directly - that is when your Krita uses the OSes file manager - if it uses Krita’s own file manager dialog, then you have to notice the path to your resource folder, because closing Krita should close that file manager dialog too. Now browse to the just noted folder with your regular file manager.
And now you have to delete your resourcecache.sqlite. With a little luck Krita will now accept your bundles when it starts up the next time after it rebuilds the resource database.

If that did not help either, then my bag of possible ideas to solve that issue is empty more or less. At least with those tips that are easy and quickly done. Because what you can also try is to reinstall Windows from scratch. The reason behind that is that I had to reinstall Windows recently and after that reinstallation of Windows Krita did not throw that error on me, so I guess a fresh installed Windows can be a possible cure.

If all those actions don’t help, you need to wait for our developers finding another solution to this issue. I have had this issue two times times and for me both of the above described ways worked without issues.

Have you tried Settings/manage resource libraries to see which bundles are available. If they are deactivated, you can activate them from there.
