Composition

On several sites I visited dealing with composition in art or photography, the authors also resorted to examples using film screenshots. Something that is used a lot is the "triangle principle" (I’m not sure that’s the correct term). This is what it’s about:

If you look for other screenshots, even from old movies, you will recognize this pattern…

There’s a spiral too. You can see that in some classic paintings.

The Golden Ratio?

There are other examples here.

@Grum999 has made a plugin where these golden rules are implemented “Composition Helper”, it is a neat and helpful plugin.

Too bad that can’t be installed on Android. Looks interesting. Next time I’m on my Windows computer, I might check that out. :+1:t2:

If you want try these.

I made this Golden Ratio spiral in Inkscape, but I never got around to using it…and I ended up deleting it a few months ago.

Does symbol library works in android, i have set of symbol for common compositions. Spiral, ratio, and the one with diagonal line.

I’ve never tried that. I don’t even know how to use those.

Cool! Thanks for sharing!
It’s now bookmarked. :+1:t2:

this is extremely helpful. Though, I usually refer to this guide:

Thank you, I didn’t know that.

For those who make comics, Wally Wood had this little guide: 22 panels that always work.

I did a Tumblr search for “composition art tutorial” a few hours ago. It came less than I expected, but the Improvewithtutorials blog has good stuff: Shadow composition / Vídeo / More in tag

This I don’t even remember where I found it, it’s probably a page from some manual about making cartoons:

These pages from Edwin G. Lutz’s “Drawing Made Easy” show a simplified use of one of the Golden Ratio forms.

Yes, this is another way. But film storyboards are made by artists… so it’s normal to find these compositional elements in films in addition to drawings.

Something I like to do when watching videos on YouTube is take screenshots of scenes. You can pause the video by pressing the space bar. To move forward / backward one frame, you use, respectively, the > and < keys.

To take the screenshot I use the Windows Capture and Sketch tool.

If you want to extract all frames from a video, you can use VLC Media Player, following this tutorial… but it’s more practical to do this using short videos.
