How come some ABR files don't do anything, whilst others give the patterns?

Does it have to do with the photoshop version or something?

Yes, this may be due to the Photoshop version. However, there is a tool with which you can convert all of these ABR’s into an ABR format readable by Krita, so far. Only ABR’s with copy protection, and damaged ABR’s cannot be converted.
Unfortunately it is no longer officially available for download, but you can still find it on Archive DOT Org, or download it from my cloud.
If you download it from my cloud, you will find there the installable version of abrMate (setup file), as well as the portable version of abrMate in a ZIP and a 7ZIP archive, as well as a folder containing the portable version with all associated files, which would have to be downloaded completely.
A copy of the former website of abrMate in PDF, PNG, and HTML format is also stored there.

Thank you so much!!!

If abr contains Artistic brushes (brush engine with dulling and angle system which was introduced in PS CS3) than you got problem with importing. That’s from my practice, and it concerns not only Krita but other software too.
Here and there in the forum I read many posts that abr is changed from version to version, and that makes various problems for even backward compatibility inside PS not to mention importing abr into Krita. But honestly, I never got a single problem to export e.g. 2018 PS brushes into CS6 (2012), or when I downloaded and put files from various artist in my older version of PS.
The same while importing in ClipStudioPaint: I have no problems with all abrs from various PS versions in case if they not containing Artistic brushes.
