Monthly Art Challenge – February 2025 – Fabulous Flora! 🌸

Hello Krita Artists :wave:t4:

The Monthly Art Challenge for January 2025 is complete. Congratulations to @Mythmaker, the winner. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

Here is the new monthly challenge created by @Mythmaker.

:tulip: :lotus: :cherry_blossom: :herb: ~ Fabulous Flora! ~ :herb: :cherry_blossom: :lotus: :tulip:

It’s winter in my corner of the world and I’ve long since tired of the short days, cold, dreary weather and lack of flowers. Spring will be along in a few weeks time but that’s not soon enough! So, I decided we need an injection of colour to help push through the gloom!

The brief:

Your task for this month is to draw/paint a scene celebrating plants as its central theme. It can be real or imaginary and as simple or complex as you like - from a study of a single flower to an exotic alien forest. All styles are welcome - just make it fabulous!. It’s okay to include people or animals, but make sure plants remain the focus of your piece.

Optional: As an additional twist, think about incorporating some natural texture into your piece e.g. some real captured paint texture, or photo/scan of some organic texture. I don’t mean to use to photos in a directly representational way (e.g. a photo of leaves to represent leaves); only in a more abstract way to help achieve a more organic impression.

Happy painting! :paintbrush: :slightly_smiling_face:

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress (WIPs).

Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – February 2025

Rules

  • The composition should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else. If you are using a reference photo taken by anyone other than yourself, please ensure the license allows for its use and include a credit to the photographer with your submission.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread. All entries must appear in a single post. Please do not post your submissions in any other category on Krita-Artists until voting has closed and the winner is declared.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2025-02-25T18:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner will have the privilege to set the next topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category.

I am trying out the brushes from the digital atelier, and I just finished this one. It is based on a photo I took last year.
I used pastel brushes only and added a frame and shadows around it, inspired by the framed pastel file in the digital atelier set.

My first is not editable anymore, so I will add my first entry here.

This is one of my first paintings on Krita from a couple of years ago. The red rose and white daffodils are based on photos I took from my garden. The rest is pretty much imaginary, based on photos I took over the years. I made it on a giant file, A3 size with 600 dpi, and when I printed it, I lost all the details. Lesson learned. I used all kinds of brushes, from watercolor to oil paint brushes, within the same file, as I was trying to learn. I still love it even though it is not what I was trying to achieve. I have just purchased the digital atelier, and I will try to paint one more image for this challenge.

@Olcay_Bentley you need to put all your entries in same post to make it easier to gather them in the end. You can modify your initial post by clicking on the pencil!

Hi @Deftool - Welcome to the community and to the challenge!

I deleted the link to your other post and inserted everything directly here. The other post will be deleted. Once the contest closes, you can repost it in the finished artwork category if you wish.

All the rules to the contest are in the first comment in this thread, in case you haven’t seen them.

Thank you, sry I am not familiar with the site yet.

I have never done this, so I am assuming I just reply to the original post and upload my “art”.

I have a zillion photos that I randomly show on my desktops as a slide show. I was reading about the monthly challenge, and behind the browser, this image coincidentally came up. So, here we go.

A scene from my garden.

The Chinese firmly believe that spiritual practice can make one become a god, so they have imagined and created many stories. Practitioners can stand on swords and fly into the sky, and they can increase their strength by taking magic medicine. However, the magic medicine is guarded by a magic beast, and to get it, one must fight with the magic beast.

This is my entry for Fabulous Flora. I found it tough to chose which plants to draw, there are so many. I decided to make a little time spiral, starting with first flowers seen (in Denmark) while it’s still winter, Snowdrops, then going on to some first in Spring, Crocus etc. Ivy is there all year around and personally, I like to include it in my decoration wreaths.
