Monthly Art Challenge – July 2025 – Cool Rides

Well, dunno why, I’m already getting some Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races vibes for this…

Well, if we’re going for cool rides…
I know of nothing that says “COOL” more than Scuderia Ferrari on their home track, Monza in the 1960’s! I mean, just look at the F1 Ferrari 246 Dino’s lines! So sleek!

I still have some details and tweaks, but the main idea feels solid… so here’s the first look:

It’s definitely a cool image!

I’m not sure it meets the brief though - assuming I’ve interpreted it correctly.

The key point for me is ‘design a vehicle’ which implies creating something from imagination rather than illustrating a real car.

There’s no reason you can’t reference real cars for inspiration though (a concept artist usually would). I once used a vintage racing car as the basis for a racing droid design for a contest (think it might have been a Shelby Cobra!).

Anyway - I didn’t set the theme so better ask @Katamaheen for the correct interpretation!

Like I said when I first heard the theme, I’ve had this idea around old race posters in my head for a while, so I’m betting that biased my reading of the challenge’s details. It was still fun to get this ‘on paper’ over these past few days.

I guess when I read “design” my mind went straight to ‘a slick graphic design and highlight a car’ rather than ‘dream up a race car that has never existed and paint (draw) it’.

I’m down either way, just let us know the direction you’d like us to run in @Katamaheen.

If it’s the second way… Looks like I scrap my next idea and save all of your eyes from my attempt at a Tom Selleck portrait with him standing next to Magnum PI’s Ferrari 308 GT. :winking_face_with_tongue:

@Mythmaker ’s interpretation is the right one. You can always take you car and merge it with a chili pepper

Thanks for clarifying… and no, I just don’t think so. I’ll leave it open to someone else to merge a Ferrari with a pepper! Maybe even a veggi version of Tom Selleck too?

I’ll finish this one up and just not post it here… we’ll see what else I come up with for the monthly challenge.

This is my rough draft of my concept for this challenge. I am hoping that is shaping up to fit the brief.

Hey everyone…
I am leaving on vacation and I’ll be on the road for a month or so. We are traveling to the northern US Rocky Mountains area to get away from this heat for a while, and visit a few National Parks, then possibly on up to Banff, Canada. I’m taking my Surface tablet, but don’t know if I’ll get any painting done. I’ll be taking lots of reference photos and I’ll stay in touch where ever I have internet service.

Vacation? Sounds great! Then I can only wish you a wonderful vacation!
And that it’s not as hot where you are as it is here right now. Yesterday it was 43 °C in my room :sweat_droplets: , but after heavy thunderstorms last night it has cooled down.

But… but… we can’t have a car-themed month without the car specialist!..

How do you manage that?! I struggled with the 32 degrees we had on Monday!

Well - I was out cycling in it, so that probably didn’t help…

Since I am bedridden and cannot run away from it, I am fortunate to have a good tolerance for heat, and if I drink enough water, I am fine.
My large pedestal fan also helps a little, although it only circulates the air and provides convection cooling. I seriously considered setting up my small emergency/spare fan as well, but decided against it because of the effort involved.

In the past, I too would certainly have been out and about on my bike. I almost overdid it in my 20s, riding an average of 20,000 kilometers a year. In the last few years before the nursing home, however, it was only a good 8,000. It was a great time.

@Michelist Now that’s hot! Our afternoon thunderstorms help cool it off here in Florida too.

@Michelist I hope you have someone to make sure you’re OK in the heat

@Mythmaker IKR! I will try to get something entered. My stupid Surface tablet has a dead zone strip across the top, so I have to minimize the Krita window and situate it below the dead area so I can use the stylus LOL Hey… I’ve got an idea from back in the day. Do you remember Rat Fink? I’m thinking along those lines.

Don’t worry, despite the nursing crisis, we are well cared for, and the staff working here are absolutely top-notch. It’s gotten to the point where we have to worry about their protection and safety, because they are working themselves to the bone for us without looking out for themselves.
I love them for that. They are amazing people, worth every ounce of love you can muster! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I have a question for @Katamaheen. I was curious if we are to show the illusion of motion with our car or can they be stationary with the illusion of revving the engine?

@Artist78 You can show your car however you want, with or without background, in “motion” or stationary… the important part is the car!
