Suggestion: Improving the Brush Presets Docker

Hello everyone!

It is known that Krita gets mentioned a lot for not being intuitive or user friendly and the problem with this is that this kind of feedback doesn’t always mention specific scenarios or suggestions.

As someone who has made quite a few brushes and bundles I honestly believe that one of the areas where Krita needs a revamp is in the Brush sorting and organization, specifically in the Brush Presets docker.

It currently handles brush sorting through the brush name(alphabetical order) and grouping through Tags. None of these systems are simple and straightforward and it can be really painful to get the brushes in the order you want.

My suggestion would be to fix this through the contextual menu, drag’and drop, and a group(folder) system, completely dropping the tags.

In this screenshot there’s the current contextual menu and my suggestion for it:

The first four options are the same we get in the brush editor, added here for accessibility.

Create New Group / Move Brush preset to Group: These are self explanatory, more on groups later.

Reset Bundles to Default: This is a much needed “safety measure”. A lot of users like to tweak and experiment with brushes knowing that there’s an option to revert everything to normal. This would reset all the bundles(and brushes within) to their default state, including restoring deleted brushes.

Delete brush preset: …

Next there’s the Brush drag’and drop in the list and thumbnail view.

Click, drag the brush to where you want it, drop and it stays there.

And last the Groups:

I imagine the groups as folders that can be collapsed vertically, and can also be dragged.

Unlike Tags, there’s no way to have the same brush in multiple groups. This would be managed the same way as in any other software: duplicate the brush and move it to the desired group.

I think that’s all. Let me know what everyone thinks and thank you for your time and attention!

I don’t care for folders (I find tags convenient and intuitive enough), but I want drag-and-drop brush ordering so bad! I hate having to add nonsense like a) to my brush names to get them showing up in a useful order. Due to this sorting, bundle brushes easily end up in the middle of my own groupings, yuck. Also, last I checked, it required restarting Krita for renaming to actually affect ordering.

For what it’s worth, whether drawing or painting, I rely almost exclusively on the Brush History Docker.

Those new context options would cause many users distress for sure. Such sensitive options need to be properly placed in a editor not where you go to pick while drawing.

Not sure I understand what you mean. Those are the kind of options you get in most painting programs when you right click a brush:

Did you saw similar topic? Actually, that and yours could be merged together.

And yes, Krita’s brush management is counterintuitive for visual artists. For now Preset Groups and Shortcut Composer are saving things. Plus Docker Under Cursor plugin help to bring brush presets in pop-up window.

I wasn’t aware of that topic, thank you.
It does seem that we are pointing the same problems and offering similar solutions
