I am am bit confused about having these two tools that perform a very similar task. Can someone enlighten me what the different use cases are, and why we have two tools that seem very similar?
similar color selection is for example when you don’t have a discrete area you want the selection to apply to or the things don’t connect at all. Imagine working on pixel art sprites and now you want to replace a specific red tone with pink.
But arent both basically the same as the Magic Wand in Photoshop, just with contiguous checked or unchecked?
I don’t know, I didn’t use Photoshop in over a decade. Honestly, I also don’t understand why it is important how it is in Photoshop.
It is not important how it is in Photoshop, that is not my point. I just wonder why we have two tools that seem to do a very similar thing. I don’t really see the added value of having these two tools exist, instead of just having a switch in the tool options? I am all for an easier to use and clear interface, which is why I asked this question, as I don’t really see the benefits.
I can only guess what the intention was. Perhaps the one tool was there first, perhaps the algorithms are too different to put them together logically or perhaps it’s to better distinguish them from each other as the tool options often get overlooked. You could also ask why polygonal, elliptical, square and freehand selection are not just one tool with a switch.
In my opinion hiding functionality in sub-menus or other windows doe’s not automatically make an interface more clear.
Photoshop for example has different brush tools instead of joining the engines together into one freehand brush like Krita does.
But this is all just discussing opinions.
Certainly things could be discussed, and there are different ways to go about things.
I use many different programs, both desktop and mobile and there are different schools of thought regarding the amount of elements and tools in an interface. I hate that Procreate hides a lot of core functions, especially ragarding selections, in one item. If things can be simplified/merged in a way that is clear for the user, it is probably a good idea.
One thing I would appreciate is if Krita would allow me to rearrange its tools and perhaps group tools I use less frequently, or leave ones out I never use anyway (like the hand or zoom tool)
I personally am quite taken by theway Clip Studio Paint organizes its tools and subtools, but that is quite far off of what Krita does, so I would not suggest changing all of this behaviour. But I am all for user customzation, as every user has different preferences and workflows.
I also have no issue if things stay as they are, as I don’t use either of these tools a lot. I just wondered if there was something I missed in the way these tools operate.
This can be tested with a new plugin that already is in Krita NEXT.
I don’t know CSP, but it sounds like something the following plugins try to offer:
CoolBox 1.0, a Blender like toolbox for Krita
or the multi-plugin plugin Touchify which has them and more embedded:
Touchify Plugin - Tablet / Touch Friendly Accessibility & More

Many thanks for the ideas, I will check them out!
Then I recommend you try Touchify. On the one hand, the other plugins are integrated into it, and on the other hand, it offers so much more. But it has an overwhelming wealth of features and a steep learning curve at the beginning, so it can be is intimidatingly powerful—but I love it.

I am slightly worried that by installing such a complex plugin, I will destroy my well working Krita setup. But yes, it looks very interesting and I might try it.
You could back up your kritarc beforehand. But I’ve been using the current version since December without problems (beside the learning curve).
You can find the download after clicking on the main-button on the left side of the plugins GitHub page and selecting version alpha.0.0.6.1 before starting the download via the green <> Code-button on the right. Alternatively, you can use this direct link:
