I’m currently learning how to draw and trying to develop my own art style. I’m using Krita, and I want to start making my own custom brushes — especially for inking, textures, and effects — so I can work faster and more consistently.
The problem is, the brush editor in Krita feels really overwhelming. There are a lot of options, and I’m not always sure what each setting actually does or how it affects the brush stroke. I’ve watched a few tutorials, but I still feel lost when it comes to making brushes that feel right for my style.
I’m mainly working on manga-style art, so I’m looking to make inking pens, fill tools, and a few brushes for things like screentone textures, nature stamps, and FX (blood, speed lines, ect).
If anyone has advice, beginner-friendly guides, or even example brushes I could learn from, I’d really appreciate it. I’m not trying to copy someone else’s exact style — just trying to figure out how this tool works so I can shape my own.
Then you really should try these brushes: Mojo Moo for comics
You may also like this additional bundle that he no longer included in the above bundle, but many do request it, so I offer it via my cloud:
And here in this topic you’ll find two ink bundles that are awesome:
You may also want to search through our resource category, be sure to always scroll down to the end so the site loads the next bunch of bundles, or you will miss a huge part of the available brushes.
If you don’t fear buying the most expensive brushes for Krita out there, you may be interested in this set of three brushes some seem to love. If they are worth the price, I can’t tell, for me these are too expensive and I’ll never buy them:
Just made my first custom brush — huge thanks for you helping out! Once I finish the full set, I’m planning to release the bundle for free and post a full tutorial on YouTube to help other artists get started with the bundle.
Fantastic stuff, thank you so much for joining in and sharing
In my opinion, the best way to get started is to play around with everyone’s ink brushes like Ramon’s and Gege Akutami, and play with them/their settings (Some more: Rakurri has some great ones, Aurelia too, and there are even some cool default ones like Sumi-e)
The idea is to make a copy of a brush you like and use it as a template. Eventually you’ll figure out what setting-combo does the thing you want - and before you know it, that editor will be your best friend (૭ 。•̀ ᵕ •́。 )૭
The official Krita channel also has some videos explaining for making them too! (6:05 is when brush editor overview starts btw)
Finally, here’s a link to my own experimental inks (beta). I’ve used the settings to recreate things like:
splodgyness,
randomness (like accidental small spatters)
hard/soft edges depending on pressure,
size reduction when moving fast
and other stuff
Try using them as a template with your own brushtips and see if it’s any use for your goals
✨ Extra rambling about the experimental inks
They were made in an attempt to re-create the beautiful “dye bleed” effect you see when you mix ink and water together, and paint with it. Due to this, they use a brushtip type called a “colour mask” - that’s why no matter what colour you pick, it’s always black.
They haven’t been “officially” released because I still have documentation/pretty icons to do (which takes time), but I made/used them for a commission so they are pretty solid as-is!
