I have been experimenting with textures quite a bit off and on. I am trying to achieve a “happy medium” of painterly and the “polished” wow, pseudo 3D look (digital rendering…I think…). Is there a way of composing bumpmaps, 3D looking textures without having to go outside of Krita to do it? I would love and appreciate step by step info. I have tried vewing videos on the subject and I either can’t see the menus/tools that are being used or Photoshop,Blender, etc is being used as part of the example. I don’t own a laptop or PC so most 3D imaging of any kind is off the table. I would love to be able to compose my own maps in Krita (if it is possible) and have no problem putting in the work to do so. Also, if it is possible, what kind of format/s would I use to save my works? I am using a Samsung S6Lite Tab/ Android 13 OS. Thank you for your time beforehand!
Could you post an example of what you trying to achieve? I know what bump maps are but from your description allone don’t know what you want to do with them or if you just want to create them. For a moment U though you’re trying an impasto effect (there are brushes for that in Krita) but I’m really not sure.
You always save your projects in kra format, that’s the only one that supports all Krita features. For only sharing the end result you use File → Export… And save it as PNG in sRGB mode, this is what everyone can view without Krita.
I want to create them. Specifically, by hand, rather than using photos (I am starting to name and be able to tell the lizards apart in my yard). I am hoping to create 3D textures (or close to 3D) completely within Krita. I already build brushes and so forth and am looking to build textures. I have found some articles covering the subject of height maps, displacement maps, etc…but then they start to make reference to Blender, which I don’t have the means to use. Is there a method of being able to do this strictly within Krita? Thank you again for your time!
Hi RookStar
I am still not sure if i understood correctly but i still want to try to respond (and regret later)
Assumption 1 - You want to create textures for 3d model
In that case you definitely need a 3d program where models can be made or imported. then UV unwrap and import it to krita where you can paint bump map, colour maps, specular map etc.
Assumption 2 - You want to import models in krita and paint texture
This is not possible in krita for android platform as far as I know
Assumption 3 - You want to paint in krita which should look like 3d
In that case you don’t need any bump maps or normal map as it would only entail painting in a way where 2d image would look like a 3d render. of course this requires much skills and a proper understanding of lighting. you can use advance blending mode to create some bump mapping type effect.
If there is a fourth scenario then I guess you may need to explain further or someone else may respond
Well technically you can because those maps are normally just floating point grayscale images however there’s no way to view them as something else than the raw image data they were drawn as, you need a software that actually uses them to see their effects. That’s probably why everything ultimately references to Blender and similar software. You can’t make anything truly 3D in Krita, it’s a raster painting program.
I make new from visible and do bumpmap or height map and remove alpha of the colors where area is flat
Not sure if these posts can help
Sorry for my question being a bit confusing as I am not well versed in the the technical terms and aspects of digital painting/rendering. I was actually afraid to ask the question, not knowing how to ask it…lol. You all actually answered my question. I am not looking to paint 3D models (although, that would be really cool sometime down the road). I am definitely going to check that out @tachiko ! I do a lot of fur, scales etc… You all gave me some ideas. I have used some of the embossing filters. I am trying to achieve deeper richer textures. I definitely want to explore using height maps. It looks as though I am going to have a lot of experimentation ahead of me. Thank you all very much for your responses! They are extremely appreciated!
